A woman has died in a car crash in the US mere seconds after posting selfies online and updating her Facebook status.

Woman dies in crash just seconds after posting selfie on Facebook

At 8.33am last Thursday morning Courtney Sanford wrote on her Facebook page: “The happy song makes me so HAPPY.” At 8.34am police were called to the scene of a car crash on a highway.

Ms Sanford was alone in her car when it crashed into a recycling truck and burst into flames. The other vehicle was driven off the road and its driver, 73-year-old John Wallace Thompson, walked away from the scene unharmed.

Ms Sanford was driving to work at the time and police found no evidence of drink, drugs or speeding.

Over the weekend friends of Ms Sanford told police that a number of her status updates were posted around the time of the crash. Upon investigating, police found that she had also been taking pictures of herself while driving on the highway.

Lt Chris Weisner from the High Point Police Department said the crash was like a real-life advert “showing what happens when you text and drive”.

“In a matter of seconds, a life was over just so she could notify some friends that she was happy. It’s really not worth it,” he said.

“As sad as it is, it is also a grim reminder for everyone… you just have to pay attention while you are in the car.”
