Teenage girl arrested for tweeting al-Qaeda 'threat' to American Airlines

A teenager has been arrested after sending a "threat" to American Airlines over social networking site Twitter.

The 14-year-old girl wrote: "hello, my name's Ibrahim and I'm from Afghanistan. I'm part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I'm gonna do something really big bye".

American Airlines responded to the message, saying: "Sarah, we take these threats very seriously. Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI".

Attempting to rectify the situation, the teen typed: "I'm really sorry. I'm really scared now. I made a joke, please... I'm just a girl."

The tweets have since been deleted, along with the youth's Twitter account.

Dutch officials later confirmed Sarah reported to the police following the incident, accompanied by a relative.

A spokesperson for Rotterdam police told AFP: "She's been taken into custody with a hearing against her to start soon".
