‘Vanity Fair’ likens Gwyneth Paltrow to North Korea’s Kim Jong-un

It was meant to be a piece of journalism amounting to an “epic takedown” — a profile of Gwyneth Paltrow in Vanity Fair that would include “bombshell” revelations about her personal life.

But it appears to be an epic flop judging by editor-in-chief Graydon Carder’s comments this week.

In his Editor’s Letter for Vanity Fair’s March edition, editor-in-chief Graydon Carder accused Paltrow of behaving like North Korea’s dictator as he addressed all of the rumours swirling about reporter Vanessa Grigoriadis’s once-planned controversial piece of journalism.

“The Insider” confirmed that the article will not be included in Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue. Rather, Grigoriadis has a seemingly much less controversial article featured in the magazine titled, “Why Stylists Are the New Queens of Hollywood”.

“Vanessa turned in her story at the end of the summer,” Carter’s note begins in an excerpt that appeared on Vanity Fair’s website. “And it was just what had been assigned — a reasoned, reported essay on the hate/love-fest that encircles Gwyneth Paltrow. I thought it perfectly explained the whole phenomenon. But it was such a far cry from the almost mythical story that people were by now expecting — the “epic takedown”, filled with “bombshell” revelations — that it was bound to be a disappointment. What to do? I decided to sit on it for a time.”

According to the New York Times Ms Paltrow went on the offensive after it was reported that Vanity Fair was about to run an unflattering piece on her.

Carter says the actress urged showbusiness friends to boycott the magazine because of the “epic takedown” report.

“She asked that they not speak to Vanity Fair about her, or about anything else ever again,” he writes. “Ever. Never. Kim Jong-un couldn’t have issued a more blanket demand.”

Paltrow has made no comment on the matter.
