Police responding to reports of screaming coming from a home in Maine didn’t find a victim of domestic violence as they feared. Instead, they found an amorous pig.
State police say a woman called last week after hearing what she believed to be a fight coming from a neighbour’s home in the town of China.
The Morning Sentinel reports that four state troopers responded and talked to the neighbour. She explained that she raises pigs and the screaming was coming from an overjoyed male pig that had been placed in a pen with five sows in heat.
Police were on the alert after a 6ft crocodile was reported to be on the run.
Nick Gargan, the chief constable of Avon and Somerset Police, said the reptile was spotted under a bridge in Bristol.
“One of our officers was flagged down by a bus driver today, claiming to have seen a 6ft crocodile under Coronation Bridge. We can’t find it,” he wrote on Twitter yesterday.
When asked by one Twitter user whether there was a crocodile on the loose, Mr Gargan replied: “It may mean precisely that, madam. No need to stay indoors — but you may want to think twice before you go water-skiing.”
Thirteen “incredibly rare” iguanas that had been stuffed into socks by smugglers have been seized by Customs at Heathrow Airport.
The endangered lizards were found in a suitcase at Terminal Five when officers stopped two Romanian women who had arrived from the Bahamas.
They were due to take the San Salvador rock iguanas — which are native to the Bahamas and classed as being under threat of extinction — on to Dusseldorf in Germany.
Each one of the creatures was wrapped in a sock, and 12 survived the journey while one died. Grant Miller, from the Border Force’s endangered species team said the seizure was “remarkable” and “very important”.
Three waitresses at a restaurant say they could only stare in disbelief when a woman handed them each a cheque for $5,000 (€3,700).
Matt Nebiu, owner of the Boone County Family Restaurant in Caledonia, Illinois, said business was slow when the customer handed cheques to Amy Sabani, 25, Sarah Seckinger, 23, and Amber Kariolich, 28.
Ms Sabani said the woman told the waitresses to use the money for school and “everything else in life”.
A movie based on a reality TV show about the relationships between celebrity fathers and their children has become a box-office smash.
Dad, Where Are We Going? raked in 90m yuan (€10.8m) the day it was released. The film broke the record for a single day’s earnings for a 2D Chinese-language movie.
The show was a hit on Chinese television last year as five celebrities who were more used to spending time away from their children attempted to look after them. The movie follows the same format, with the fathers and kids visiting a wildlife park and attempting tasks such as cleaning animals’ teeth and making dumplings.
A German shepherd is back on solid ground after being rescued from a sinkhole that opened up in a park.
The three-year-old dog dropped more than 10ft to the bottom of the watery hole during a morning walk with his owner, Mattie Moore, who nearly fell in herself.
Buffalo firefighter Michael Paveljack says rescuers put plywood around the 2ft hole to stabilise the ground, then widened the gap for the rescue. Mr Paveljack climbed down a ladder and fashioned a makeshift harness from the dog’s leash that allowed rescuers to hoist it from the hole.
