Learner drivers are being urged to make sure their instructor is operating legally after dozens were convicted for not having the correct licence, the UK’s Driving Standards Agency said.
The warning comes after more than 123 people were arrested for offences relating to illegal driving instruction in the last four years. Of those, 39 were convicted and 31 received police cautions.

Work has got underway to repaint the striking red and white stripes on a landmark lighthouse following a campaign backed by Eddie Izzard, John Craven, and Bill Bryson. More than £27,000 (€32,000) was raised to pay for the revamp of the Beachy Head lighthouse in Eastbourne, which has begun after being delayed by poor weather last week.
The fundraising campaign was launched after Trinity House, which oversees navigational aids in parts of Britain’s coastline, said the lighthouse was no longer needed as a daymark, the reason for its eye-catching appearance. Its distinctive stripes were to be left to fade to its natural granite grey colour due to the cost of repainting it, but locals stepped in to raise the money to give it a fresh look.
Police arrested two people for peddling protected primates after pop star Rihanna posted a picture of herself snuggling up to a primate during a weekend at the beach in Thailand.
On a break from her Diamonds World Tour, Rihanna visited the island of Phuket, where she posted a link on Twitter to an Instagram photo that showed her in sunglasses snuggling up to a primate called the slow loris, a squirrel-like animal which is listed as a protected species.
Police confiscated two lorises from a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, who could face charges of possession of protected animals. The charge carries a penalty of up to four years in prison and a 40,000 baht (€1,000) fine.
A Second World War soldier’s heartfelt letter to his daughter has finally reached her hands, seven decades later.
Peggy Eddington-Smith was presented with the letter penned by her father, Pfc John Eddington, and his Purple Heart, during a ceremony in Dayton, Nevada, on Saturday.
The father she never met wrote the three-page letter shortly after she was born and just before he died in Italy in June 1944. Donna Gregory of St Louis found the memorabilia in a box 14 years ago while helping her then-husband clean out his grandparents’ home in Montana.
