Rubbish chute baby’s mum jailed

A mother who threw her newborn baby down a rubbish chute has been jailed for two-and-a-half years after being found guilty of inflicting bodily harm.

Jaymin Abdulrahman, 25, denied the charge, along with one of attempted murder and a separate charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to her six-day-old daughter.

A jury of seven men and five women found her guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm but cleared her of the two other charges at Birmingham Crown Court.

The baby suffered skull fractures and brain injuries after she fell more than 40ft into a bin store at a block of flats in Wolverhampton last September.

Judge Mrs Justice Kate Thirlwall said she accepted that the incident was not premeditated and that Ms Abdulrahman was suffering from post-natal psychosis — a severe form of post-natal depression — at the time.

But sentencing the Iraqi national, she said: “As you said yourself, you were her mother. You should have been her guardian.”
