Linesman dies after attack

A Dutch football linesman has died after being kicked and beaten by teenage players from a youth match he was supervising.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen was rushed to hospital hours after players from Nieuw Sloten of Amsterdam kicked and punched him. His club, Buitenboys, announced the death but not the cause. Three players, aged 15 to 16, were arrested for alleged involvement in the beating.

Dutch sports minister Edith Schippers said: “It is absolutely terrible something like this can happen on a Dutch sports field.”
