A Dublin toddler who could not eat or drink has taken her first taste of food after US doctors carried out a pioneering procedure to grow her a new oesophagus.

Mother Esti Madden said it is a miracle her 18-month-old daughter Elie has been able to breathe on her own for the past week, also enjoying her very first meal of a few spoonfuls of vanilla pudding.

Elie, who was born with an oesophagus too short to connect to her stomach, was placed in a five-week coma at the end of last year to allow doctors carry out a procedure called the Foker process.
