Earthquake strikes Peru

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 has struck on the coast of central Peru, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake was recorded at 11 minutes after midnight local time, 15km from the city of Ica, which was badly damaged by a major 8.0 earthquake in August 2007 and also suffered damage in a quake last October.

Yesterday’s quake was at a depth of 39.2km.

USGS maps showed the epicentre exactly on the Pacific Ocean coastline. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

No tsunami warning was issued.
