British trials to be televised

CRIMINAL court proceedings in Britain will be televised for the first time to improve public understanding of the justice system, a senior minister said.

The move comes after criticism that some courts had handed out excessive sentences to many of those found guilty of rioting last month.

Cameras will only be permitted to record judges’ summary remarks at the end of each case.
