The key to safer teenage driving

PARENTS will be able to “control” their children’s driving thanks to a hi-tech system by Ford.

The MyKey system allows car owners to programme a key that can limit a vehicle’s top speed and ensures seatbelts are being worn. MyKey will also prevent young drivers from disabling any safety features.

The system will deliver an earlier-than-normal low fuel warning and limits the audio system volume. Already a success in the US, it will be introduced in Europe next year.

System architect Peter Patzelt, said: “MyKey adds a new dimension to auto safety by giving drivers standard technology that encourages safer driving and limits their exposure to risk, regardless of age or experience. In particular, it can give parents peace of mind when they hand the keys over to their kids.”

The system in the US allows the programmer to:

*Limited top speed to 80mph (128km/h).

*Traction control system, that limits tyre spin, cannot be deactivated.

*Limited audio volume to 44% of total volume.

*A speed alert chime at 45, 55 or 65mph (72, 88, 104km/h).

At the US launch, it conducted a survey that found 50% of those who would consider purchasing MyKey also said they would allow their children to use the family vehicle more often if it were equipped with the new technology.

Teens surveyed said they were largely open to MyKey if it meant they would have more freedom to drive.

Initially, 67% of teens polled said they would not want the features, but if using MyKey led to greater driving privileges, only 36% said they would object.
