Milly Dowler killer seeks compo for attack in prison

LAWYERS acting for the killer of Milly Dowler are negotiating with the Prison Service over how much compensation he should receive for being attacked in jail, they said.

The prison authorities have admitted full liability for the incident involving Levi Bellfield, but a figure for compensation is yet to be agreed, said Jeremy Moore, of Carter Moore solicitors.

Reports said that Bellfield was suing for £30,000 (€34,000).

According to the Daily Mirror, he is demanding compensation after suffering cuts following an attack outside a bathroom in HMP Wakefield. The attack was reported to have taken place last year, before his trial for murdering 13-year-old Milly.

He was jailed for life in June after being convicted of abducting and murdering the schoolgirl in March 2002.

In 2008, Bellfield, a former wheelclamper and bouncer, was given a whole life term for murdering Marsha McDonnell, 19, in 2003 and murdering Amelie Delagrange, 22, and attempting to murder Kate Sheedy, 18, in 2004.

Moore said yesterday: “In September 2010, we were instructed to represent Mr Bellfield in relation to a personal injury claim. Our client was injured after the prison authorities, in breach of the duty of care which they owe to every prisoner, housed him on a wing of the prison that was unsuitable for a prisoner of his category. Subsequently, Mr Bellfield was attacked with a weapon by another prisoner causing injuries to his face and mouth.”
