Mirren, 66, beats models with best celebrity body
The actress, best known for 1990s television crime drama Prime Suspect and films including 2006’s The Queen where she played Elizabeth II, pipped supermodel Elle MacPherson, 48, to the top spot for women in the poll.
They both gained more votes than model and television presenter Kelly Brook, who came third, while Pippa Middleton could only manage eighth place in the list after wowing the nation in a figure-hugging dress at the royal wedding in April. There was no place for her sister, the newly-wed Duchess of Cambridge.
New US X-Factor presenter Nicole Scherzinger was tenth.
The men’s poll also showed that older male celebrities fared well in the voting stakes.
Although David Beckham, 36, topped the list, five of the top ten were aged in their 40s or above, including 43-year-old James Bond actor Daniel Craig, who came second, and music mogul and X Factor supremo Simon Cowell, 51, who was tenth.
Tony Orme, from LA Fitness which conducted the survey, said: “Helen Mirren’s victory in our best body poll illustrates how, when it comes to body maintenance and wellbeing, age really is nothing but a number. It’s great to see the public celebrating bodies of all shapes and sizes, and proving that you really can look fabulous over 40 and 50.”
Mirren gained acclaim after paparazzi photographs of her in a bikini in 2008 showed that she had kept a fantastic figure into her 60s.
She leads a female top ten that also celebrates women with curves, in which she is joined by Brook, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, television presenter Holly Willoughby and actress Kate Winslet.
The men’s top ten was dominated by a predictable cast of names including Beckham, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt. But there was also room for Cowell and another unlikely heart-throb of the 21st century, former Baywatch actor David Hasselhoff, 59.
