Warhol portrait sells for €19m

A 1986 Andy Warhol self-portrait that was among the last of his paintings exhibited while he was alive has sold at a New York city auction for $27.5 million (€19m).

The stark red-on-black Self-Portrait had been estimated to fetch up to $40m (€28m) at Christie’s auction house.

The painting, almost nine square feet, is considered a landmark work by the American artist. The auction record for a Warhol is $71.7m (€50m), for Green Car Crash.
