Syria ban

THE European Union announced sanctions against Syria, imposing an arms embargo as well as travel and financial restrictions on 13 of the regime’s top officials.

The move follows meetings last week of political and security advisers from the 27 EU countries and come into force today.

A ban on the shipment of arms is coupled with a blockade on the sale of “any products which could be used for internal repression”, said an EU official.
