Park rangers said the 21-year-old told them he freed himself from the wreckage after the crash on Monday evening and then climbed to the rim to seek help.

Officials said the man, who has not been named, was treated at Flagstaff Medical Centre for non-life-threatening injuries.

His car was located about 200ft (61m) below the rim, lodged against a tree.

National Park Service officials said they are investigating the incident.
