35 drown in Congo sinking

AT least 35 people have been reported missing in Lake Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo after their boat capsized, ship owners in the region said yesterday.

The vessel sank near Minova in the Kalehe territory, 45km from Bukavu, capital of Sud Kivu province, with about 40 passengers and a variety of goods on board, said Jerome Moke, chairman of the association of ship owners of Lake Kivu. “We have found five survivors, a woman and four men. The boat itself has not been found,” Moke said.
