THOUSANDS of children working in India’s circuses are to be taken into care after a ruling by the country’s top court.

Until six months ago circuses were exempt from laws which prevented anyone under 14 being made to work. And even after a legal ban came in it was largely ignored.

Yesterday, a Supreme Court ruling made enforcement of the law mandatory. The court ruled on a petition from the Save the Children Movement filed in 2006 after the group studied children in circuses and found the employment often led to trafficking.
