Six miscarriages on same street in seven months

FIVE women living on the same street suffered six miscarriages within seven months, it has emerged.

The neighbours in Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute in Scotland, all live within a few doors of one another in the town’s Collingwood Place and want to know if their cases are linked.

Mother-of-three Jennifer Taylor, 25, had two miscarriages between September and December. She said: “It’s heartbreaking to go through this, you really can’t describe it. We need to know what is going on.”

The women live on an estate for the families of armed services personnel working at Faslane Naval Base, home to Britain’s nuclear submarine fleet.

Ms Taylor and a second woman said their husbands and children had often been ill with diarrhoea.

The Ministry of Defence said it had not been made aware of any issues with the water supply which it said has been tested.

A spokeswoman urged the women to attend a walk-in welfare centre which offers advice and support on the estate and said the MoD would look into any information brought to them.

Meanwhile a spokeswoman for Argyll and Bute Council said: “We were obviously concerned when The Sun drew Ms Taylor’s concerns to our attention, and took immediate steps to contact her to see how our environmental health team might be able to help.

“The area environmental health manager wrote to Ms Taylor last week to discuss the issues which she and her neighbours have raised in more detail.

“We look forward to hearing from Ms Taylor in the near future in order that we can investigate the matter further.”

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “Our water treatment works that serves Helensburgh supplies over 100,000 customers and the water quality performance of this works is uniformly excellent, with recent reports going back several years indicating that water quality is consistently within regulatory parameters.”
