NY Times to charge online

THE New York Times Co said yesterday it will begin charging readers who don’t subscribe to its newspaper on March 28 for content on the newspaper’s website.

The Times Co. will charge $15 (€10) every four weeks for unlimited access to the newspaper’s website from a computer or mobile phone. The company will also offer packages for $20 every four weeks for access via its tablet-computer application and $35 for access from any device.

Non-subscribers will still be allowed to read 20 stories for free each month, and access the NYTimes.com home page and section fronts.

“The step we are taking today will further improve our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers across the world on any platform, while maintaining the large and growing audience that supports our robust advertising business,” Janet Robinson, the company’s chief executive said in the statement.

Times Co rose 34 cents, or 3.8%, to $9.20 at 11.24am in New York Stock Exchange trading.
