Wintour: British fashion humour is spot on

ONE of fashion’s biggest names, US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, has praised the British fashion industry for having a “sense of humour”.

She said: “I think that’s what’s so great about British fashion, they always have a sense of humour and that’s something we could afford to have a little bit more of here in the States.”

Ms Wintour was praising Topshop’s 101 Dalmatian-themed catwalk at London Fashion Week in which models wore a variety of spotted outfits.

She added: “Topshop fills a very special position in British fashion. It provides inexpensive, well-priced clothes for young girls in very much a street culture. It’s something we don’t see so much in the US.”

The editor was joined on the front row of a show by Scottish designer Christopher Kane, presenter and model Alexa Chung, socialite Daphne Guinness and models Yasmin Le Bon and Jade Parfitt.

Kane’s collection has been one of the most highly anticipated of the week and was widely applauded from those at the top of the industry, including Ms Wintour, who wore a striking black and gold full-length coat.

“We’re all a big fan of Christopher in the States. He’s obviously a young man with a huge future in front of him and also a lovely person.”

The designer’s latest creations are made of a liquid-look plastic which gives a wet, shimmering appearance, similar to a mermaid.

The designs were met with admiration from many well known fashionistas.

Parfitt, who was wearing a green Christopher Kane dress, said: “I thought that was so beautiful. I loved the liquid dresses, they were amazing and the sequin pieces at the end were so beautiful.

“I am a great fan of Christopher’s. He’s just incredibly clever from the collar to the cut.

“He makes dresses that women really want to wear and I’m one of them,” she said.

Le Bon described the British designer’s collection as “fantastic and uncompromising” and said: “He does his own thing, not trying to keep people happy but trying to keep himself entertained, I think.”

Chung joined Ms Wintour on the front row of Kane’s show, saying she was “really proud that he’s British and that talented”.

“He’s just really original. You haven’t seen anything he’s created before and it’s really rare that this happens,” she said.
