ATTEMPTS to impose obligations for ‘balanced coverage’ on all media from public broadcasters to bloggers by the Hungarian government together with threats to control media from outside the country being picked up by Hungarian citizens are “cause for doubt” according to the European Commission.

However, the major issue in the controversial Hungarian media law, that of the government appointing its supporters to a body to oversee all media, may escape censure from Brussels because of weak EU legislation in the area.
