70 die in Iran plane crash

AN IranAir passenger plane crashed in the country’s north-west region yesterday, killing at least 70 of the 100 people on board.

The other passengers survived with light injuries, Iranian media reported.

The Boeing-727 crashed shortly before it was to land in Orumiyeh, 740 kilometres north-west of the capital, Tehran, said Abbas Mosayebi, spokesman of the Iranian civil aviation organisation.

Reports said there was bad weather and fog in the area.
