RAPE defendants will not win the right to have their identity protected, the British Ministry of Justice said yesterday, reneging on a pledge made in May.

Justice Minister Crispin Blunt said there was not enough evidence to support a change in law that would allow defendants in rape cases to remain anonymous, as victims currently are.

The proposal originated from complaints that false rape accusations could damage defendants’ reputations.
