GERMAN police scuffled with protesters as tens of thousands of people gathered in Dannenberg, northern Germany, vowing to block a nuclear waste convoy arriving from France.

The heavily guarded train, carrying cargo activists say is “the most radioactive ever”, crossed into Germany on Saturday and halted at Kehl station, to take on more police.

In Karlsruhe protestors were waiting, police said.

Organisers in Dannen- berg said 50,000 people – 20,000 according to police – turned out ahead of the arrival of the train with 123 tonnes of radioactive waste.
