CALIFORNIA’S election of Democrat Jerry Brown as governor was an extraordinary political encore, letting him reclaim the office he held a generation ago.

His victory involved defeating billionaire Republican Meg Whitman and the $142 million (€100m) of her own money she spent on her campaign.

The win by the 72-year-old leaves him with the enormous task of lifting the nation’s most populous state out of a recession and driving down the jobless rate. The former Jesuit seminary student said he is up to it.
