DIVERS found a body after a collision yesterday between a cargo ship and a small barge on a canal in the central Netherlands in which the skipper of the barge went missing, police said.

Body found in canal

“Police divers have found a body in the Amsterdam-Rijn canal, at the spot where the barge was capsized in a collision” at Nieuwer Ter Aa, northwest of the city of Utrecht, a police statement said about eight hours after the incident.

“The identity of the body has not been ascertained.”

A German cargo ship collided with the barge about 7am yesterday, prompting a massive search for the skipper of the barge – which is used to transport bicycles and pedestrians across the canal.
