A TOWN mayor saved the life of a pensioner who collapsed at home after a heart attack.

The victim’s son found the phone number of Wootton Bassett mayor Mary Champion on the council’s website and begged her to check on his father who was not answering his phone.

David Read, 60, lives 50 miles from his frail father Stan, 87, and had logged on to the website looking for help. But the offices were closed. Then he saw Champion’s number.

Campion found Mr Read lying on the floor after suffering a heart attack. She called paramedics, then sat in the hospital for three hours as he waited for his son to arrive.

Read praised Champion and said she had saved his father’s life. &Champion played down her actions.
