Schoolgirl murder trial

A FORMER wheelclamper is to go on trial next May for the murder of schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Levi Bellfield, 42, is alleged to have kidnapped the 13-year-old in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002 before killing her.

Bellfield is also accused of attempting to kidnap 12-year-old Rachel Cowles the day before Milly went missing.

He appeared at the Old Bailey for a brief hearing via videolink.

Shaven-headed Bellfield, formerly of West Drayton, London, spoke to confirm his name during the hearing. The defendant remains in custody and is due to face trial on May 5.

Amanda Dowler, known to her family as Milly, disappeared on March 21, 2002, as she walked home from a railway station after school.

Her remains were found six months later in woodland in Yateley Heath, Hampshire, some 40km away.
