THE International Press Institute said yesterday 52 journalists lost their lives in the first eight months of the year because of their jobs – four fewer than in the same period in 2009.

Alison Bethel McKenzie, interim director of the Vienna-based watchdog, said Mexico led the so-called Death Watch with 10 fatalities to the end of August, followed by Honduras with nine and Pakistan with six.

Last year, a total of 110 journalists died because of their profession.
