127 Hours is based on the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston, who was forced to cut his own arm off when he was trapped for five days by a falling boulder in an isolated canyon.

Boyle, from Bury, Lancashire, said: “I am honoured and delighted that 127 Hours has been selected to close the BFI London Film Festival.”

The film, starring US actor James Franco, reunites Boyle with the screenwriter and producer of Slumdog Millionaire, which won eight Oscars in 2009.

Both Boyle and Franco are expected to attend the red carpet for the festival’s closing night. The festival runs from October 13-28.
