It will be Gordon Brown’s right as the incumbent prime minister to try to form an administration – even if Labour has the smallest share of the popular vote.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has not ruled out a deal with Labour if they come third in the vote, but he has indicated he could not work with Mr Brown as prime minister.
