ADVOCATES of independence for the proud, economically powerful region of Catalonia asked residents yesterday to cast symbolic votes in favour of breaking away from Spain.

Many in this ancient winemaking land have long complained that they contribute far more to the Spanish national budget than they receive in public services.

Organisers hope the vote in 167 pro-autonomy hamlets, villages and towns, which has no legal impact, will build momentum behind an independence movement for the region around Barcelona.
