Three arrests after man murdered for laptop

Khurram Ashraf, 30, was blasted once in the stomach after he and a colleague were ambushed by a lone gunman as they left a money transfer shop in Longsight, Manchester, on Thursday.

The men, aged 25, 26 and 29, were arrested on suspicion of murder and are being questioned by detectives.

Ashraf, a post-graduate student from Rawali in Pakistan, had worked for several months at Global Forex.

He was leaving the shop on Stamford Road with two friends at around 6.20pm when they were confronted by a gunman who demanded the laptop and cash.

A friend of the victim said he was about to get into a silver Mercedes SL when the gunman appeared and demanded the bag carried by another employee.

The other employee threw the bag to Ashraf, who resisted the gunman’s demands, and was shot at several times.

Detective Superintendent Julian Ross, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is clearly a tragic incident that has resulted in a man losing his life. This appears to be an isolated, albeit utterly devastating, incident.

“We have received significant assistance from the public. However, our investigation is at an early stage and we need that help to continue.”

Anyone with information can call police on 0161 856 3691 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
