Landslide kills over 40 people

A LANDSLIDE triggered by torrential seasonal rains killed more than 40 people in southern India.

It demolished nearly 300 tin-roofed mud huts in the Ooty and Coonoor region of Tamil Nadu state yesterday.

Rescuers found 42 bodies in the debris and eight injured people were taken to hospital.

The death toll was expected to rise with the rescue operation continuing in the region.

Ooty is a popular tourist destination, but none of those killed or injured were foreigners.

India’s June-September monsoon season causes severe flooding and kills hundreds of people.
