Drug kingpin gets 45 years
Montoya, 48, whose Norte del Valle cartel once supplied well over half the Colombian cocaine smuggled into the US and Europe, had agreed to serve the time as part of a plea deal back in August. He also signed a document detailing his rise to the top of Colombia’s cocaine underworld.
Prosecutors estimate that between 1990 and 2004, the cartel exported more than 500 tonnes of cocaine, worth in excess of $10 billion (€6.6bn), from Colombia to the US.
