THE bitter political row over public spending took a dramatic twist yesterday as the Tories claimed that leaked treasury papers showed Gordon Brown was engaged in a cover-up over planned government cuts.

Conservative leader David Cameron said the leaked documents revealed the government was set to slash spending by almost 10% over the next four years, which he said raised questions over the prime minister’s honesty.

In the run-up to the summer recess, Brown used Prime Minister’s Questions to repeatedly accuse the Tories of planning cuts of 10% — something which he the government would not do.
