Face transplant patient dies

A BURN victim who had received a simultaneous partial face and double-hand transplant in a French hospital has died.

The Paris Hospital authorities says the man, whose name has not been made public, died as a result of a bacterial inflammation of the transplanted tissue.

A hospital statement said the 30-year-old man had expressed satisfaction upon seeing his new face and hands before he died.

The patient died as a result of a heart attack during subsequent surgery that followed the transplant operation a month ago.

The hospital says the man did not show signs of rejecting the transplants at the time of his death.

The hospital says the man died on June 8 at the Henri Mondor hospital in the Paris suburb of Creteil.
