THE number of birds which are critically endangered has increased despite conservation efforts around the world, according to the latest update of species threatened with extinction.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species shows there are now 192 birds listed as critically endangered, which means they face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

The number in the highest risk category is two more than last year’s list.
