THE EU is to investigate taking prisoners from Guantanamo, the US detention centre in Cuba that President Barak Obama has promised to shut within a year.

The US has not officially asked any country to take any of the 245 inmates yet, but has had preliminary unofficial talks with a number of states.

EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels yesterday saw the subject as a way of responding positively to the new Obama regime that was taking the kind of action advocated by most European leaders in closing down the camp.
