Worker dies at supermarket after stampede

A WORKER died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart in the US, witnesses said.

Shoppers, who had snapped their wallets shut since September, flocked to stores before dawn yesterday to grab deals on everything from TVs to toys on the traditional start of the holiday shopping season.

The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5am.
