The shy 18-year-old is slow to speak about the last year, one that tore her from her family home and youth and hurled her into a fugitive and lonely adult life.

The Congolese mother is even more reserved, almost fearful, when drawn into talking about the baby boy in her arms. The infant’s name, Thank You God, reveals little about how he was conceived but more about the fact his mother is still alive today.
