A police marksman who shot dead an innocent Brazilian in the aftermath of the London bombings choked back tears yesterday as he recalled how he was convinced the man was a suicide bomber about to strike.

The officer, identified only as C12, said he was certain he had to kill Jean Charles de Menezes to stop another atrocity.

He told an inquest how he came face to face with the 27-year-old electrician in a London Underground train at Stockwell station on July 22, 2005 — the day after a failed attempt to repeat the carnage of July 7, when 56 people were killed and more than 700 injured.
