Breakup sees Material Girl throw another man onto the scrapheap
And now she’s hit yet another romantic breakdown.
When it comes to relationships, rocky is an understatement for the Queen of Pop — but many believed the 50-year-old’s marriage to British film director Guy Ritchie was built to last.
If it is all over, this was certainly her longest stab at settling down. The couple have a biological son, Rocco, eight, and an adopted son David Banda, three. Madonna also has an older daughter, Lourdes, who celebrated her 12th birthday this week.
As a wannabe pop star Madonna dated collaborator Stephen Bray. Together the pair set about making Madonna an international celebrity. They worked together to produce hits including Into the Groove and True Blue.
In 1985 Madonna got her first taste of life as half of a celebrity couple when she met Hollywood actor, Sean Penn.
It was a whirlwind romance and the pair married later the same year. But as quickly as love had blossomed it began to wilt.
In 1987 she filed for divorce, changed her mind but then, on New Year’s Eve 1988, the pair finally separated and divorced a year later.
As her music and videos became more daring and controversial so did her love life. In 1990 she began dating Tony Ward — a model who had appeared in some of the singer’s more risque videos.
After Ward, Madonna dated long-forgotten rapper Vanilla Ice but this romance and another with cross-dressing basketball player, Dennis Rodman, were short lived.
In 1994 Madonna met Cuban Carlos Leon, who became not only her fitness trainer but her lover. Two years later, Lourdes was born. But even a new baby could not keep the pair together.
In 1999 she was introduced to Guy Ritchie by Sting — who appeared in his most successful film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
The pair fell in love and married on December 22, 2000. Until this week the pair had always denied they were about to split.
