POLITICAL enigma Sarah Palin did a lot to rescue her faltering reputation in an effective debate but failed to revive her party’s troubled bid for the White House.

John McCain’s running mate spoke directly to camera, avoided engagements and delivered often-repeated one-liners with confidence and conviction.

From her opening statement Palin made it clear she was targeting the working class demographics of “Joe-sixpack” and “soccer moms” and did so with a folksy tone pitting voters against Washington elitists. She even managed to give a “shout-out” to all the eight- and nine-year-olds who are taught by her brother in Alaska and were promised extra credit for watching the debate.
