Richard Garriott will make history as the first child of a US astronaut to rocket into orbit.

He is set to fly aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the international space station on October 12.

He said: “To be frank, this price tag is the majority of my wealth.”

His father, Owen Garriott, 77, was a Nasa astronaut who visited the first US space station, Skylab, in 1973.

On Monday, British billionaire Richard Branson unveiled a carrier aircraft designed to launch a passenger-carrying spaceship.

White Knight Two must undergo a rigorous flight-testing programme.

SpaceShipOne’s successor, SpaceShipTwo, is about 70% complete, according to Virgin Galactic.
