Shouts of ‘rot in hell’ as sex killer jailed

SEX killer Mark Dixie traded insults with model Sally Anne Bowman’s family and friends yesterday as he was jailed for life for her murder.

Angry scenes broke out at the Old Bailey after Dixie was told he would have to serve at least 34 years.

There were shouts of “rot in hell, pervert” as Dixie was being led away.

Friends in the public gallery called out, “I’ll see you again” and Dixie retaliated, “Come on, both of you”. The emotional atmosphere followed a tearful testimony by the 18-year-old’s mother Linda, 45.

Mrs Bowman demanded to know why Dixie had killed and treated Sally Anne in such a “depraved” way to take her “last piece of dignity”. She said: “Please can you ask him why he killed her and why he did those things?”

Her three other grown-up daughters wiped away tears as she told the judge of the heartbreak of being told her youngest daughter was dead.

“From that moment on, my life was over,” she said.

After the verdict, the policeman who led the hunt for the killer called for a national DNA register.

Detective Superintendent Stuart Cundy said having everyone’s DNA on file would speed up arrests and cut down on offending.

Dixie had 16 previous convictions in Britain but all were before DNA was routinely taken from suspects.

The court was told Dixie, a 37-year-old chef, stabbed the teenager seven times and had sex with her as she was “dead or dying”.

Her near naked body was found in a pool of blood in the driveway of her digs in Croydon, south London, a few hours later in September 2005.

Sally Anne was bitten four times when she was dead.

Dixie placed cement rubble in her mouth and on her body.

He had got away with a similar attack on a Thai student in Australia in 1998. She survived to give evidence against him.

He was arrested for Sally Anne’s murder nine months later after being arrested for a minor scuffle over a World Cup football match.

His DNA was placed on the police data base and he was in custody five hours later for the killing.

Dixie, who had string of sex convictions in Britain and Australia where he lived for six years, denied killing Sally Anne.

He claimed he found the teenager, thought she had passed out drunk, and had sex with her.

He said he did not realise she was dead until after he had sex with her.

A video film found after his arrest showed him masturbating onto newspaper pictures of the model.
