DAVID Letterman and Jay Leno were set to return to the air last night, two months after writers went on strike.

CBS’s Late Show was returning, complete with writing staff and Robin Williams, the master of improvisation, as Letterman’s first guest.

Williams’ appearance may be Letterman’s way of trying to draw a distinction between his show and his late-night rivals, who are working without striking writers and may also have trouble booking major entertainers.
