BELFAST-BORN Manchester United player Jonny Evans was released on bail yesterday after his arrest in connection with an alleged rape at a hotel where the club was having its Christmas party.

Evans, 19, a defender who joined United in July 2004, presented himself for questioning on Tuesday evening and was held overnight at a police station in Manchester.

He was questioned again yesterday and is believed to have fully co-operated with police.

He was released on police bail and ordered to present himself to police on February 23.

He presented himself to police after jetting back into Manchester Airport following a day trip to Monaco, thought to be pre-arranged with a relative.

Police began an investigation after a 26-year-old woman claimed she had been attacked at the Red Devils’ party at the Great John Street hotel.

She was taken to a hospital’s sexual assault referral centre where medics examined her.

She gave a brief statement to police before being allowed to go home and was interviewed again yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester police said: “A 19-year-old man has been bailed until 23 February. Further inquiries will take place.”

United had booked the 30-room hotel for the party, which was attended by 150 guests. The hotel, a converted Victorian schoolhouse, has a rooftop hot tub and suites that cost as much as £395 (€549) a night.

Some United stars headed to the party after a marathon drinking session.

They started at lunchtime on Monday, at the city centre’s 235 casino where they had a flutter and lunch.

They moved to the Grapes pub for a sing-song, and some paid a brief visit to a lap-dancing bar.

Close to 100 women were at the hotel party, some having travelled hundreds of kilometres to attend.

One male guest said: “Most were aged between 18 and 30 and some were throwing themselves at the players.”

Evans has been a regular for Northern Ireland for a year and turned out in their 1-0 away defeat to Latvia in August in the European Championship qualifiers.
