French hope worst violence is over

FRENCH police were yesterday hoping the worst violence was over after three nights of street rioting.

But they were to deploy in strength last night in suburbs of Paris in an attempt to stamp out any trouble before it spreads.

On Tuesday the tactic proved successful after two nights of rampages saw gunmen shooting at police and petrol bomb-throwing youths setting fire to buildings and cars.
